Mi sto innamorando dell'intaglio della carta! / I'm falling in love with papercut!

Per chi non lo conosce, esiste tutto un mondo di carta, l'elemento più comune, organico, ecologico poichè riciclabile, lavorato in un modo tale da diventare arte. Qui vi mostro un settore particolare della lavorazione della carta cioè il suo intaglio - troverete più notizie e immagini come 'papercut' -. Da esempi quasi elementari si arriva ad elaborazioni veramente raffinate ed incredibili, ammirate:

E questa è la mia esperienza: è un lavoro di pazienza, precisione ma che da le sue soddisfazioni! Se volete provare avrete bisogno - oltre che della carta! iniziate con quella normale ma il bristol è meglio - di un taglierino come vedete nella mia foto e di una base che resista ai tagli, al momento ho trovato solo questa tavoletta di legno, ma consiglio di procurarsi quella tavoletta semirigida plastica che usano gli incisori ed i gioiellieri - cercatela come 'cutting mat' -.

| And this is my test: this work needs patience, accuracy but it's rewarding! If you want to try you need - paper of course! start with common paper but the bristolis better - a cutter like the one in my photo and a strong back, i have only that wood back, but i suggest to get a cutting mat, semi-rigid plastic back used by engravers and jewelers.

Ho realizzato questi teschi per halloween, riprendendo il tema del 'Dia de Muertos' - il giorno dei morti messicano - equivalente alla nostra Commemorazione dei Defunti che ricorre il 2 di novembre - mentre la notte di Halloween è quella tra il 31 ottobre ed il 1° novembre -. Lo scheletro umano fa parte dell'iconografia della cultura latina e cristiana - nella danza macabra, nella vanitas pittorica - ed in particolare il teschio è simbolo della morte e della caducità della vita. Questa funzione di 'memento mori' (ricordati che devi morire) ricorre dall'antichità ad oggi sia nelle raffigurazioni pittoriche - affreschi nelle chiese del tardo medioevo, stampe e xilografie dal rinascimento -, sia nella scultura - bassorilievi delle tombe cristiane, 'For the love of god' di Damien Hirst -  che nella rappresentazione scenica - 'Amleto' di W. Shakespeare, 'Il settimo sigillo' di I. Bergman -.

| I design these skulls for halloween, picking up the topic of the 'Dia de Muertos' - the mexican dead day - that is the same of our deads remembrace, recurring on november the 2 - whereas the halloween night is between the october 31 and november 1 -. The human skull belongs to the iconografy of the latin and christian culture - like in the dance of death or in the vanitas in painting - and the skull is the sign of death and of the frailty of life. This function of 'memento mori' (remember that you have to die) is used since antiquity to today, in the painting - frescos in the late Middle Ages churchs, print and woodcuts since Renaissance -, in the sculpture - bas-relief of Christian graves, 'For the love of god' by Damien Hirst - and also in the plays - 'Amleto' by W. Shakespeare, 'The seventh seal' by I. Bergman -.

Ormai anche i nostri bambini sono abituati alla visione di scheletri e zombie, quindi ho realizzato questi teschi da indossare come maschera per le mie bimbe: due sono da colorare alla maniera dei colouring book mentre quello rosso è uno dei miei primi lavori di intaglio della carta - attività che mi sta affascinando - ora tocca a voi

By now our children are used to viewing of skeletons and zombies, so i made these skulls to wear as mask for my girls: two to be coloured by the colouring books way, while the red is one of my first papercut crafts - i am going to take a fascination with this task - now it's your turn

Fai-da-te: trasformare le riviste in uno scalino / DIY: Recycling magazines into a step

Un modo alternativo per riusare le riviste! Ecco quel che mi serve per creare lo scalino che mi manca: al piano primo non ho volutamente realizzato il primo scalino della scala in acciaio, perché vorrei un elemento diverso, come materiale colore e impatto. Ma ora – con il trasloco alle porte – qualcosa devo fare … ed appunto organizzando i pacchi mi sono detta ‘dove metterò tutte le mie riviste di architettura?!?’. Con questo assillo - ma senza farmi prendere dal panico da trasloco – ho realizzato un fai-da-te semplicissimo! Ho impilato le riviste, di formato simile - vecchia collezione di Domus fine anni ‘90 – e le ho impachettate con uno spago che crea un bellissimo contrasto con le incredibili copertine delle riviste. Speriamo che non si rovinino troppo!!!

An alternative way to reuse the magazines! This is what I need to make the step I miss: on the first floor I wouldn’t make the first step of the steel staircase, because I wish a different thing, such as material colour and mood . But now – with the move coming – I have to do something … and just setting up the parcel I wonder ‘where do I get all my architectural magazines?!?’. With this torment – but being not to panic – I make a very simple diy! I stack the similar sized magazines – an old collection of Domus late 1990s – and I pack up them with a cord creating a beautiful contrast to the amazing magazines covers. Let’s hope they don’t spoil too much!!!

Dall’ingresso … / From the entrance …

Il portone d’ingresso , bianco come il resto, senza cornice, sul pianerottolo in cemento lasciato a vista.

The front door, white as the rest, without a frame, on the landing made in concrete. 

Questa scaletta d’ingresso è fatta in ferro, come quella per il secondo piano. Pochi scalini fissati sulla soletta in c.a. del pianerottolo ed a terra. Come nel tableaux dell'ingresso su instagram!

This little stair is iron made, as the one for the second floor. Few steps fix on the reinforced concrete slab landing and on the ground. As in the entrance moodboard on instagram!

Questo piccolo ingresso risulta molto luminoso grazie ai vetri nuovi, bianco latte come la verniciatura del portoncino e della porta del garage – i nostri lavori fai da te!

This little entrance seems to be very bright tanks to the new glasses, milky white as the painting of the entrance door e the garage door – our work DIY!

Fai da te: il portoncino !!! / DIY : the front door !!!

Premesso che il fai da te non è il nostro forte … ci mettiamo all’opera per sverniciare il portoncino su strada, che mi è sempre piaciuto ma va valorizzato. Speriamo di riuscirci: dobbiamo anche cambiare un vetro rotto e non trovando più quello vecchio li sostituiremo entrambi. Intanto riusciamo a togliere la vecchia vernice e portare in superficie le venature del legno, che penso sia di olmo.

I have to say that diy is not our strong suit … we  set to work on the paint stripping of the front door on street, that I love but it must be valued. We hope to be able: we have to change a broken glass but  not finding the old type, we have to replace both. First of all we achieve to remove the old paint and to bring to light the wood veins, that I think it is of elm.

Verniciando il fronte della casa / Painting the house elevation

Probabilmente non immaginate come era il fronte della casa: una sconcertante – per il colore – piastrella di ceramica riveste la facciata della casa. Ora che sono intervenuta sulle aperture – alzandole da terra e coibentandole – dovrei intervenire sulla facciata: creare una cornice che si abbini a quelle piastrelle?! No, non è possibile! Se le tolgo posso fare il cappotto termico! Si perfetto, anzi no – il regolamento al momento della richiesta edilizia non permetteva il rivestimento col cappotto termico se questo va ad interferire con le distanze minime (tra edifici e con i confini) e, che fortuna! la casa è proprio a filo strada! – quindi ho valutato le ultime alternative, non dispendiose, come quella di verniciare le piastrelle! Ma l’unica soluzione ragionevole è un buon intonaco a calce, che faccia letteralmente respirare le pareti. Quello che si vede è l’intonaco asciutto, steso a mano da abili muratori, che appare di quel bel bianco latte.

Probably you have no idea as the house elevation was: a baffling – for the color - ceramic tile covers the house elevation. Now that I modified the windows – getting up from ground level and insulating them – I have to redesign the elevation: to design a frame that matches these tiles?! No, it’s not possible! If I remove them I can put up the thermal insulation coat! Yes perfect, indeed no – at the time of the building  permit, the regulation did not allow to put up the thermal insulation coat if it is interfering with the minimum distance (between the buildings and the edges) and, what luck! the house is on the street edge! – so I have considered the last options, not expensive, like the one to  paint the tiles! But the only wise solution is a good lime plaster – mortar – that makes the walls breathe literally. What you see is the dry lime plaster – mortar – lays down by hand thanks to the skilled masons, and it looks as a handsome milky white.

Ora arriva la parte dura per me e Daniele: sverniciare il cornicione e ripulire bene il pluviale e la grondaia. Poi ci improvvisiamo nuovamente pittori! Con la vernice a calce bianca – NON UNA SEMPLICE IMBIANCATURA! - che serve da protettivo per l’intonaco – anche se era veramente bello da vedere! –

Now hard times comes for me and Daniele: the paint stripping of the ledge and cleaning of the drainpipe. Then we improvise painter again! With the lime paint – NOT A SIMPLE WHITEWASH! – that is used as a protective coat for the plaster – even if it is so hansome to see! -

Nota dolente: non riverniciando il fianco della casa – i nostri vicini non possono! – lo spigolo è un po’, come dire, irrisolto … Però il risultato e la fatica fatta ci tirano su di morale.

Sticking point: not repainting the house elevation side – our neighbours can’t do it! – the corner is a little, you know, outstanding …  But the result and the hardly work cheer we up.

La sverniciatura / The paint stripping

La sverniciatura è uno di quei lavori che non augureresti neanche al tuo peggior nemico: inutile provare con “magiche” sostanze, meglio armarsi di tanta pazienza ed un raschietto. Perché ci siamo ridotti a fare ciò? Bene, la parete è solo quella della scala, che ho valutato avesse un intonaco non cementizio, ma aveva anche delle vernici assurde! Avete presente quelle che usavano negli anni ’70 un po’ in rilievo e plastificate? Impossibili da eliminare, fino a che un nostro – intelligente – muratore ha provato con la fiamma ossidrica e – non osavo crederci! – si toglieva molto più facilmente. Il fai da te ti può provare! Fisicamente e mentalmente, anche se lo fai solo nei week end!

The paint stripping is one of those works that you wouldn’t wish to your worst enemy: it is useless to try with “enchanted” substance, it’s better to arm yourself with great patience and a scraper. Why do we end up to do it? Well, I think that the wall on the staircase was not made of cement plaster, but it had an absurd paint! Do you know those ones from the ’70s, a bit embossed and plasticized? These are impossible to remove, until one of our – smart - masons  tried with the blowtorch and – I couldn’t believe it! – it took off far more easily. Do it yourself can strike you down! - physically and mental – even if you do it only on the weekends!

Acc!! Non sono affatto contenta della prima facciata che porto a termine! NON posso cambiare quel giallo ammuffito! NON posso cambiare i terminali dei pluviali!

Il fatto è che i proprietari dell'appartamento al piano terra sul retro, non possono al momento fare interventi di manutenzione, così devo raccordare i pluviali all'esistente - quell'imbuto ... storto ... è orribile!!! -. E il colore ?

I am not happy at all about the first front done! I can NOT change that musty yellow! I can NOT change the end of the drainpipe!

The fact is that The owners of the ground floor apartment on the back cannot make maintenance work, so i have to connect the drainpipe to the existing ones - that funnel ... crooked ... it's awful!!! -. And the colour?

Armiamoci di pennello - letteralmente - ! La sottoscritta e il Dani - spalla ... testimone ... marito ... - ci dedichiamo ad un po' di fai da te. Dobbiamo riprendere quel giallo - !!! -. Per il parapetto opto per il bianco, come sarà la terrazza. Così, quasi sfumando il parapetto nel cielo, ottengo un ridimensionamento della facciata sul retro, troppo tendente alla verticalità.

Fatica ... compromessi ... smontano l'impalcatura ... un lavoro -quasi- completo ... un mio progetto - quasi - realizzato ... acc !!!

Let us have the paintbrush - literally -! Myself and Dani - wingman ... witness ... husband ... - applay to do-it-yourself. We have to pick up that yellow - !!! -. I choose to paint the railing white, like the terrace. So blending the railing in the sky, i get a resizing of the back, that goes to verticality.

Hardly work ... compromises ... take down the scaffolding ... a - about - complete process ... one of my design - about - realize ... argh !!!
