I miei muratori mi volevano abbandonare e invece qualcosa per loro c’è ancora da fare. Una volta spostato il contatore del gas, bisogna rifinire le nicchie esterne – anche della luce – e realizzare l’imbotte per il portoncino d’ingresso, arretrato verso l’interno per non uscire direttamente su strada – ricicleremo il vecchio portoncino ma ancora dobbiamo iniziare a carteggiarlo, stuccarlo ect…

My masons wanted to leave me and instead I have something to be done for them. After moved  the gas counter, one must refine the outdoor alcoves – also for the light counter – and make the portal for the old front door but we have to star to sanding, spackled it …

Nell’ingresso devono anche demolire la prima rampa di scalini …

They have to demolish the first flight of stairs in the entrance …

E mancavano i pali in legno – abete liscio ma al grezzo non trattato – per suddividere la saletta d’ingresso dallo studio. Devono fare anche il lavoro di fino di ritagliare il telo dell’impianto a pavimento!

And there are no wood pillar – smooth raw not treated pine – for the lounge and the office. They have to cut with precision the sheet for the heating system!

La mia costruzione in adobe / my adobe building

L’intonaco a calce ancora fresco è piacevole da toccare, quasi morbido e vivo. Sembra di stare in una costruzione in adobe africana o messicana - anche se non ci sono mai stata! - In realtà l’intonaco a calce è quello delle case assolate del nostro mediterraneo, e già mi fa un bel effetto vedere questi muri, con le varie altezze ed i vari ritagli …

The lime mortar is still fresh and it is nice to touch, so soft and almost alive. It seems to be in an adobe building, Mexican or African one – even if I’ve never been there! – Indeed the lime mortar is the one of the sunny houses of our Mediterranean sea, and it’s a nice result to see these walls, with their various heights and several crops …

The mortar that is going to drying, is great!

In effetti la terrazza ha un che di mediterraneo, proprio quello che desideravo per creare un angolo da vacanza sul mare.

The terrace has effectively something to seem Mediterranean, just what I wished to create a corner like a day at the beach.

Spigoli per l’intonaco a calce / lime mortar corners

Gli ultimi lavoretti mi rendono nervosa, perché vorrei vederli finiti al più presto - ed anche i miei muratori, così bravi ma affatto pazienti quando si tratta di provare tecniche nuove, per loro! – Quindi l’eliminazione della rampa di scala che porta all’ultimo piano è proprio il lavoro che fa al caso loro, così possono ancora demolire. Temo che la demolizione sia l’occupazione preferita dei muratori, si impegnano veramente, anche se di mettere un po’ d’acqua per contenere la polvere, non se ne parla neanche! Tanto i vicini protestano con me! E poi non capisco perché un modo di lavorare che fa bene anche a loro (evitare di inalare le polveri!) lo evitino accuratamente … non mi rimane che prendere una bottiglia d’acqua, tagliarne il collo e spargerle l’acqua sui detriti.

The last jobs make me nervous, because I wish I see them over – and my masons, so good but not patient at all about new techniques, for them! – So the stair’s removal is the work just right for them, so they can still demolish. I am afraid the demolition is the masons’ favorite job, they really commit themselves, even if there is no way to sprinkle a bit of water for shut down the dust! Well the neighbours come to complain to me! And then I don’t understand why if there is a right way to work that it’s ok for them too (avoiding to inhale the dust!) they don’t do it … I have no choice but to take a water’s bottle, to cut the bottleneck and to spread the water on the rubble.

Il contatore del gas, dopo aver fatto richiesta di spostamento … da ottobre, dall’interno lo colloco all’esterno, ma non amo tutte quelle nicchie di fianco a porte e portoni – col rischio di ridurre la massa muraria di sostegno – così realizzo la nicchia proprio nel tramezzo del garage, prima del portoncino d’ingresso.

After making request of displacement … in october, I’m going to install the gas counter from inside to outside, but I don’t like all those alcoves next to the doors and the gates – at the risk of undermine the support wall – so I make the alcove in the garage’s partition, ahead of the main door. 

E’ arrivata la macchina per l’intonaco, il mio intonaco a calce per gli interni. La squadra di intonacatori è veloce a posizionare tutti gli spigoli dei tramezzi e a fissarli con l’intonaco. Pretendo molta cura per gli spigoli del portale in ferro, dovranno essere perfetti, per far risaltare meglio la ruvidezza dell’acciaio lasciato a vista. Il portale non è stato trattato volutamente, per mettere a contrasto i due materiali, l’intonaco a calce naturale con l’acciaio industriale.

The mortar’s machine is arrived, yes my lime mortar for the interior walls. The plaster team is fast for place all the partition corners and for fix with the mortar. I expect a great care for the corners of the iron portal, they have to be perfect, in order for stand out more the roughness of the iron. The portal has not been treated intentionally, for stand out the contrast between the two materials, the natural lime mortar with the industrial iron.

Verniciando il fronte della casa / Painting the house elevation

Probabilmente non immaginate come era il fronte della casa: una sconcertante – per il colore – piastrella di ceramica riveste la facciata della casa. Ora che sono intervenuta sulle aperture – alzandole da terra e coibentandole – dovrei intervenire sulla facciata: creare una cornice che si abbini a quelle piastrelle?! No, non è possibile! Se le tolgo posso fare il cappotto termico! Si perfetto, anzi no – il regolamento al momento della richiesta edilizia non permetteva il rivestimento col cappotto termico se questo va ad interferire con le distanze minime (tra edifici e con i confini) e, che fortuna! la casa è proprio a filo strada! – quindi ho valutato le ultime alternative, non dispendiose, come quella di verniciare le piastrelle! Ma l’unica soluzione ragionevole è un buon intonaco a calce, che faccia letteralmente respirare le pareti. Quello che si vede è l’intonaco asciutto, steso a mano da abili muratori, che appare di quel bel bianco latte.

Probably you have no idea as the house elevation was: a baffling – for the color - ceramic tile covers the house elevation. Now that I modified the windows – getting up from ground level and insulating them – I have to redesign the elevation: to design a frame that matches these tiles?! No, it’s not possible! If I remove them I can put up the thermal insulation coat! Yes perfect, indeed no – at the time of the building  permit, the regulation did not allow to put up the thermal insulation coat if it is interfering with the minimum distance (between the buildings and the edges) and, what luck! the house is on the street edge! – so I have considered the last options, not expensive, like the one to  paint the tiles! But the only wise solution is a good lime plaster – mortar – that makes the walls breathe literally. What you see is the dry lime plaster – mortar – lays down by hand thanks to the skilled masons, and it looks as a handsome milky white.

Ora arriva la parte dura per me e Daniele: sverniciare il cornicione e ripulire bene il pluviale e la grondaia. Poi ci improvvisiamo nuovamente pittori! Con la vernice a calce bianca – NON UNA SEMPLICE IMBIANCATURA! - che serve da protettivo per l’intonaco – anche se era veramente bello da vedere! –

Now hard times comes for me and Daniele: the paint stripping of the ledge and cleaning of the drainpipe. Then we improvise painter again! With the lime paint – NOT A SIMPLE WHITEWASH! – that is used as a protective coat for the plaster – even if it is so hansome to see! -

Nota dolente: non riverniciando il fianco della casa – i nostri vicini non possono! – lo spigolo è un po’, come dire, irrisolto … Però il risultato e la fatica fatta ci tirano su di morale.

Sticking point: not repainting the house elevation side – our neighbours can’t do it! – the corner is a little, you know, outstanding …  But the result and the hardly work cheer we up.
